Identifying the neutrino mass spectrum from a supernova neutrino burst

چکیده

We study the role that the future detection of the neutrino burst from a galactic supernova can play in the reconstruction of the neutrino mass spectrum. We consider all possible 3ν mass and flavor spectra which describe the solar and atmospheric neutrino data. For each of these spectra we find the observable effects of the supernova neutrino conversions both in the matter of the star and the earth. We show that studies of the electron neutrino and anineutrino spectra as well as observations of the neutral current effects from supernova will allow us (i) to identify the solar neutrino solution, (ii) to determine the type of mass hierarchy (normal or inverted) and (iii) to probe the mixing |Ue3| to values as low as 10−4 − 10−3. Identifying the neutrino mass spectrum from the neutrino burst from a supernova

The current data on solar and atmospheric neutrinos admit more than one solutions in terms of the oscillations between three neutrino species. We examine the consequences of these different masses-andmixing schemes for the observable spectra of neutrinos from the burst of a Type II supernova. We point out the distinguishing features of these schemes, and discuss the prospects of identifying the...

Decoupling supernova and neutrino oscillation physics with LAr TPC detectors

Core collapse supernovae are a huge source of all flavor neutrinos. The flavor composition, energy spectrum and time structure of the neutrino burst from a galactic supernova can provide information about the explosion mechanism and the mechanisms of proto neutron star cooling. Such data can also give information about the intrinsic properties of the neutrino such as flavor oscillations. One im...

Identifying the neutrino mass hierarchy with supernova neutrinos

We review how a high-statistics observation of the neutrino signal from a future galactic core-collapse supernova (SN) may be used to discriminate between different neutrino mixing scenarios. Most SN neutrinos are emitted in the accretion and cooling phase, during which the flavor-dependent differences of the emitted neutrino spectra are small and rather uncertain. Therefore the discrimination ...

Neutrino Events from Sn1987a Revisited * * *

The e − and e + energy spectra from the SN1987A Supernova neutrino burst interactions are calculated and compared to the observed spectra in Kamiokande-II and IMB experiments. Neutrino oscillations in Supernova and regeneration effects in the Earth, for four combinations of neutrino mass hierarchy (Direct/Inverted) and the value of the mixing angle θ 13 (Large/Small), are taken into account. Th...

Supernova pointing with low- and high-energy neutrino detectors

A future galactic SN can be located several hours before the optical explosion through the MeV-neutrino burst, exploiting the directionality of n-e scattering in a water Cherenkov detector such as Super-Kamiokande. We study the statistical efficiency of different methods for extracting the SN direction and identify a simple approach that is nearly optimal, yet independent of the exact SN neutri...
